How to Play and win Poker

Poker

Beware the Sharks in the Water!

Poker is unique among casino games in that you do not play against the casino but rather compete against other players at the table.  Poker is a game of skill that can be quite lucrative for talented players and quite expensive for poor ones. There are a large number of people who actually make their living by playing Poker. Players win by either having the strongest hand or by Bluffing and scaring all other players into folding their hands thereby leaving the game.

Casino Poker Games

The most common types of Poker that you will find in casinos and card rooms are:

  • Texas Hold'em - This is the most popular form of Poker found in casinos today.  In Texas Hold'em Poker, players try to put together the strongest possible 5-card hand using any combination of the 2 cards dealt them plus the the 5 community cards that are dealt in the center of the table.

  • Seven Card Stud - Probably the most popular form of Poker overall.  It is played in casinos and kitchens alike. Players are first dealt 2 cards face down, the next 4 cards are dealt face up and the final card is dealt face down.

  • Omaha Hold'em - A game similar to Texas Hold'em but each player receives 4 cards dealt face down, followed by 5 community cards.  Players must make their hands using exactly 2 cards from their own private hand and exactly 3 cards from the community cards.

  • Seven Card Stud High -Low -  Also called Seven Card Stud Eight or Better, High Low Split.  This game works just like Seven Card Stud except that players holding the highest hand and the lowest qualifying hand split the pot.  Low hands must consist of 5 unpaired cards all with the rank of 8 or lower. If there is no qualifying low hand, the high hand wins the entire pot.  It is possible to have both the highest and lowest hands in a given game meaning one player can take both pots.

  • Omaha Hold'em High -Low - Also called Omaha Hold'em Eight or Better High-Low Split.  This game works just like Omaha Hold'em except that players holding the highest hand and the lowest qualifying hand split the pot.  Low hands must consist of 5 unpaired cards all with the rank of 8 or lower. If there is no qualifying low hand, the high hand wins the entire pot.  It is possible to have both the highest and lowest hands in a given game meaning one player can take both pots.

How to Win at Casino Poker

In order to win at poker you need to follow these steps:

1.  Play only hands you think have a real chance of winning, Fold any other hand. Bad players waste large amounts of money by staying in games with hands that have no real chance of winning.  Be patient; you will fold often but this will allow you to conserve your  money, allowing you to get more winning hands. The following chart lists what kind of hand you will need to have a realistic chance of winning:

Game Common Winning Hand
Texas Hold'em Two Pair
7 Card Stud Two Pair
Omaha Hold'em Three of a Kind
7 Card Stud High-Low Two Pair (High Hand)
8 or lower for high card ( Low Hand)
Omaha Hold'em High-Low Three of a Kind (High Hand)
8 or lower for high card ( Low Hand)

This table is based on the assumption of a typical table with 6 to 8 players.  If there are more players present a stronger hand may be needed to win.  Likewise, on a table with fewer players a weaker hand than shown in the chart above may prove strong enough to win the pot.

2. Read Professional Poker Guide Books -  These books will prove to be one of your best weapons. You should always assume that other players at the table have read up on the game.  Don't be unprepared when you show up at the table.  Below is a list of recommended Poker books:
