Betting Systems Money Management How to Count Cards
Blackjack is easy to play, fun, and one of the few casino games in which the odds can actually favor the player.

The object:  To have your cards total more than the dealers without going over 21.

Game Play

  • Everyone plays against the dealer (the Bank) and places a bet.
  • The dealer draws two cards ( faces showing) for each player and two cards for himself (one card showing and one card face down).
  • Any player whose hand totals closer to 21 than the dealer is a winner.
  • If  a hand exceeds 21 the hand busts and it is a losing hand.
  • The Dealer must continue to draw until his hand reaches a value of at least 17.
  • The Dealer must stop when his hand reaches a value  of 17 or more.
  • Players may split pairs (ex. 8,8  5,5) into two separate hands
  • Players may Double Down (Double their bet and get one more card) after receiving their 1st two cards
  • Some Casinos allow the player to Surrender or  leave the game being played and get half his bet back.

How to Win at Blackjack

Before betting any money in a casino I strongly recommend that you learn to play Blackjack the following way:

1. Learn the Basic Blackjack Strategy - This is the most important step as all advanced strategies are based on the assumption you can play the Basic Strategy perfectly.

When playing Blackjack the most important feature to know is the fact that there are four times as many cards that have a value of 10 (10, J,Q,K) as any other value.  Knowing this you should always assume that the next card to be drawn from the deck has a value of 10.  Keeping this in mind you realize that if you have any hand that has a value over 12 you are likely to bust( go over 21).  Likewise the if the dealer's card is a 2-6 he is likely to draw  a 10 card which means he will have to draw again, likely causing him to bust.

By using the Basic Blackjack strategy you should be able to take away the  Casino's built- in advantage.  The following is a chart that describes what actions you should take in a given situation:

Your hand Your Action
5 or 6 or 7 Always Hit
8 (one 6 and one 2) Always Hit
8 (one 5 and one 3) Double if the dealer has a 5 or 6, otherwise hit
9 Double if the dealer has 2-6, otherwise hit
10 Double if the dealer has 2-9, otherwise hit
11 Always double unless the dealer has an Ace
12 Always hit unless the dealer has  a 4,5,6
13,14,15,16 Stand if the dealer has 2,3,4,5,6. Hit if dealer has 7,8,9,10card, A
17,18,19,20 Always Stand
"Soft" Hands (Ace plus one other card) *Remember Ace can have a value of 1 or 11
A2, A3, A4, A5 Double if dealer has 6, otherwise hit
A6 Double if dealer has 2,3,4,5,6; otherwise hit
A7 Double if dealer has 3,4,5,6; Stand if dealer has A,2,7,8; Hit if dealer has 9,10
A8 Double if dealer has 6, otherwise stand
A9 Always Stand
Pairs When to Split
A,A Always Split
2,2 Split if the dealer has 3,4,5,6,7; otherwise hit
3,3 Split if dealer has 4,5,6,7; otherwise hit
4,4 Double if dealer has 5,6; otherwise hit
5,5 Double if the dealer has 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9; otherwise hit
6,6 Split if dealer has 2,3,4,5,6; otherwise hit
7,7 Split if dealer has 2,3,4,5,6,7; otherwise hit.  Exception: Stand if dealer has 10
8,8 Always Split
9,9 Split unless dealer has A,7,10; then stand
10,10 Never Split
Surrender This is somewhat controversial as most players will tell you to never surrender unless you are counting cards.  Nonetheless there are a few out there who recommend Surrendering under certain circumstances.
You have  Surrender if dealer has
15 10
16 (Do not  surrender if you have a pair of 8s) 10, A
A pair of 7s 10
Insurance Never take insurance unless you are counting cards

This strategy will give you even odds when playing against the casino.  In order to beat the Casino regularly  you will need to count cards.

 2. Get a Professional Blackjack Guide. Fully explaining counting strategies requires many pages and charts that must be memorized.  Having a professionally written guide that you can carry around with you is a must.  Note that different Authors have different styles and different counting systems and it is a good idea to get more than one opinion so you can choose the style that suits you the best.  Below is a list of recommended  Blackjack guides:

 3. Practice, Practice, Practice. Use training software.   I can't emphasize how important this is; you must count the cards correctly .  It is better to play the basic strategy correctly than an advanced one incorrectly.  The time and money you spend on training software will pay off in the casino.

More Tips to Help You Win

Choose the right table to play at-  When most of the players at a table seem to winning this is  a good indication the deck currently favors the player.  If you notice that the players at a table seem to be winning a lot and have a lot of chips piled up, then  join in the action.  Likewise, if you notice the dealer has a lot of chips and the players seem to be doing more losing than winning you should keep looking for a better table or if you are already playing at that table you should think about leaving and looking for more favorable conditions at other tables.

Tip the dealer if you are winning-  If the dealer knows he will be tipped when the players win he may begin rooting for you to win and actually do subtle things to help you, such as performing less thorough shuffles and penetrating deeper into the shoe before he re-shuffles (allowing the players to get a more accurate count of the cards). If the dealer starts losing too much money for the casino the pit boss will likely change dealers; reward a good dealer when you find one and make it worth his effort to help you.

Choose games with favorable rules-  While it may be impossible to find the perfect game, where all the rules favor the players; you should be familiar with how certain rules the house uses can effect you.

  • As a rule of thumb remember that the fewer decks the casino uses the more advantageous it is for the player.

Best Places to Play Blackjack:

Atlantic City: All Casinos in Atlantic City offer about the same house edge of about 0.40%

Las Vegas: Las Vegas is a great place to play Blackjack. A sizable number of Casinos in Las Vegas offer excellent games with house edges below 0.20%. Slots A Fun on the strip offers a limited number of tables that actually give the player the edge on the Casino.  Single Deck Blackjack games can be found in many downtown casinos.  Casinos Downtown usually have lower minimum bets as well.
